Dental Implants in Canary Wharf
A missing or failing tooth creeps into everyday life: the side you avoid chewing on, the smile you hold back in meetings, the crown that keeps coming loose. If you live or work around Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs, Dr Youssef El Mobayad offers dental implant consultations and treatment at Innovadent, Canary Wharf (E14 9LS). For an overview of the treatment itself, see our dental implants treatment page.
Who are dental implants for?
Implants may be worth discussing if you:
- have a single missing tooth, or a front tooth that has fractured or cannot be saved
- are missing several teeth and would rather not have healthy neighbouring teeth cut down for a conventional bridge
- have failing crowns or root-treated teeth, including work carried out abroad, that keep causing problems
- wear a denture and would like something more stable
Most adults in good oral and general health can be considered, although gum health, bone volume, smoking and uncontrolled diabetes all affect suitability. If you have been told you lack bone, that is not always the end of the conversation (see bone grafting below).
Your options
Single-tooth implant. A titanium post is placed in the jawbone to replace the root, then an abutment and a custom crown are attached. The neighbouring teeth are not touched. One case in our smile gallery shows a missing lower front tooth replaced with an implant and a custom zirconia crown over about four months.
Immediate implant ("Tooth in a Day"). When a front tooth has to come out because of trauma, a fracture or a failed root canal, it is sometimes possible to place the implant into the socket straight after the extraction and fit a temporary crown the same day. You leave without a visible gap, and the final zirconia crown follows after three to six months of healing. Suitability depends on the bone and gum around the tooth.
Several missing teeth and implant bridges. Where two or more teeth are missing, an implant does not always have to replace every tooth. Two or more implants can support a bridge. In one gallery case, two implants were placed in the upper back jaw using a surgical guide, and after the gum had healed for three months, two zirconia crowns were fitted.
Full-arch restoration (All-On-X). If most or all of the teeth in a jaw are missing or failing, a fixed full-arch bridge can be supported on a number of implants. One gallery patient arrived with multiple failed root treatments and recurring infections around crowns placed abroad. The compromised teeth were removed, six implants were placed and a zirconia bridge was fitted.
Upgrading an existing implant bridge. A worn or plastic bridge on existing implants can sometimes be replaced without new surgery. One gallery case took four to six weeks.
Bone grafting and sinus lifts
After a tooth is lost, the bone underneath gradually shrinks. Dr Youssef has advanced training in bone augmentation, including grafting and sinus lift techniques. He mainly uses a xenograft, a biocompatible bone material of animal origin that acts as a scaffold for your own bone to grow into. In some cases a small amount of your own bone, collected from inside the mouth, is used. Grafting is carried out under local anaesthetic, sometimes at the same visit as an extraction and sometimes a few months before the implant, and the area then heals for three to six months. A sinus lift creates room for implants in the upper back jaw. You can read more in Dr Youssef's article on bone grafting.
Step by step: from consultation to final tooth
- Consultation and 3D imaging. Your medical history is reviewed, your teeth and gums are examined, and 3D (CBCT) imaging of the jaw is taken to measure bone height, width and the position of nerves and sinuses. 3D (CBCT) imaging is available at Innovadent. The consultation is £95 and a 3D scan including a full written report is £195; both fees are deducted from your treatment cost if you go ahead.
- Your written plan. You will receive your options, including alternatives to implants, a timeline and an itemised cost before you commit to anything.
- Preparation if needed. This may include treating gum disease, extractions, bone grafting or a sinus lift.
- Implant placement. The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, often using 3D-guided surgery to plan the position and angle. Sedation is available, and the options are discussed at your consultation.
- Healing. Over three to six months the implant fuses with the bone (osseointegration). You will usually wear a temporary restoration, so you are not left with a gap.
- Final restoration. A custom crown, bridge or full-arch bridge is made and fitted, and your bite is adjusted.
- Review and maintenance. You receive a tailored care plan with home-care instructions and review appointments.
Healing and recovery
Most people go back to normal activities within one to two days. Some swelling and discomfort are normal for a few days, and you will be given advice on how to manage them. Recovery varies, so ask what to expect for your case. Overall timelines in our gallery range from around four months for single and double implants to around six months for full-mouth rehabilitation.
Aftercare
Implants cannot decay, but the gum around them can become inflamed. Your care plan covers cleaning around the implant at home, professional cleaning when needed, and reviews, typically every six to twelve months, to check the implant, gums and bone levels. If you clench or grind your teeth, a night guard may be recommended. With good care implants can last for many years, although the crown on top may need replacing after 10 to 15 years. How long an implant lasts varies from person to person. More in How long do dental implants last?.

| Effect on bone | Helps preserve the bone where the tooth was | Bone under the gap can still shrink | Bone can continue to shrink |
| Treatment time | Usually 3–6 months or more | Usually a few weeks | Usually a few weeks |
| Guide cost | Single implant from £2,500 | From £750 per unit | Discussed at your consultation |
